Before Smile Transformation
At Toronto Smile Design - Yorkville Dental, we believe that every smile tells a unique story. Our mission is to help our patients achieve the perfect smile they’ve always dreamed of through state-of-the-art cosmetic dentistry. Today, we’d like to share an inspiring story of transformation and perseverance that underscores the profound impact of a beautiful smile.
Digital Smile Design Planning of the Smile Transformation
A few months ago, a young woman walked into our office, disheartened by the appearance of her anterior teeth. She had recently undergone dental bonding at another clinic, but the results left her feeling self-conscious. The matte, dull-looking restorations didn’t align with her expectations. Her gums were irritated and bleeding due to the pressure from the dental bonding that had invaded her biological width. As a cosmetic dentist, I understood her disappointment and resolved to give her the smile she deserved.
The Initial Consultation: Identifying the Problem
During our first consultation, we thoroughly examined her teeth and gums. It was evident that the previous bonding had not only failed cosmetically but had also caused biological harm. For those unfamiliar, the biological width is the space on the tooth surface occupied by the junctional epithelium and connective tissue attachment. When this space is invaded, it can lead to inflammation, irritation, and other periodontal issues. We explained this to our patient and the importance of respecting this natural boundary to ensure healthy gums.

Designing the Perfect Smile: From 2D to 3D
We began by designing her new smile in 2D. This initial phase allowed us to visualize the desired outcome and ensure it aligned with her expectations. We used cutting-edge technology to capture every detail, considering her facial features and personal preferences. Once the 2D design was perfected, we sent the data to our dental lab to create a 3D Smile Prototype.
The Mock-Up Process: Visualizing the Transformation
The mock-up process is a critical step in cosmetic dentistry. It allows patients to see and feel the proposed changes before any permanent work is done. We used the 3D Smile Prototype to create temporary restorations with materials that closely mimic the final porcelain veneers. This step is invaluable for refining the design and ensuring the patient’s satisfaction with the look and feel of their new smile.
A Heartfelt Decision: Proceeding with Treatment During Pregnancy
Initially, our patient did not start the treatment immediately. However, she later called us, emotional and determined, requesting to begin the treatment despite being in her second trimester of pregnancy. She expressed a deep desire to greet her newborn baby with a beautiful smile. Although we explained that cosmetic treatments were not urgent and discussed all associated risks and benefits, she insisted. The emotional aspect of wanting to smile at her child with confidence was compelling.

Given her condition and the state of her dental health, we agreed that it was logical and smart to replace the problematic restorations. Pregnancy gingivitis posed a risk, and addressing the invasive dental bondings would help prevent further complications.

Addressing Pregnancy Gingivitis
Pregnancy can exacerbate gum issues, making our patient more susceptible to pregnancy gingivitis. The irritated and bleeding gums caused by the previous dental bonding added to this concern. Changing the restorations was not just a cosmetic improvement but also a logical step to ensure her oral health during pregnancy.
Minimally Invasive Approach
Respecting the natural structure of her teeth was paramount. We decided on a minimally invasive teeth bonding removal to protect her natural teeth. Despite designing her new smile with rounder morphology, she preferred a more squarish appearance for her final veneers. As a cosmetic dentist, while I can offer my professional opinion, the final decision always rests with the patient. After all, it is her smile, and it should reflect her personality and desires.
Crafting the Perfect Dental Veneers
She also requested a whiter set of dental veneers for her upper teeth, accepting that they might not match perfectly with her lower teeth. In cosmetic dentistry, it is crucial to honor the patient's wishes while ensuring the best possible outcome. We worked meticulously, and within two weeks, our trusted RDT Dental Lab produced the dental veneers.
The Final Transformation
A few try-in appointments allowed us to achieve perfection. Each step was carefully monitored, and her full consent was obtained before the final insertion of the restorations. The moment she saw her new smile was truly magical. Her happiness and satisfaction were evident, and she couldn’t stop admiring her reflection.

Her final documentation was a testament to our shared journey. She left a heartfelt video review, explaining the process and expressing her joy with the final result. Her gums, once irritated and inflamed, were now healthy and vibrant. This transformation was possible because we respected her biological width and employed the best practices in cosmetic dentistry.
The Importance of Regular Maintenance
Moving forward, regular check-ups and cleaning appointments are essential to maintain her teeth and restorations. Ensuring the health of her gums and teeth is a continuous process, and we are committed to supporting her every step of the way.
Understanding Biological Width
To delve deeper, the biological width is the combined width of the connective tissue and junctional epithelial attachment formed around the tooth. When dental work invades this space, it can lead to chronic inflammation and damage. Proper cosmetic dentistry respects this natural boundary to maintain oral health and achieve optimal aesthetic results.
